We are looking for enthusiastic, committed and creative people to join our friendly team:
Clay College, having just taken on its fourth cohort of students, offers a two-year, full time skills-based ceramics Diploma course, evening and weekend courses, and Masterclasses delivered by highly experienced and internationally renowned potters. In addition, the College runs a Gallery showcasing the work of leading studio potters and the work of current students.
Our mission is to develop highly skilled, self-sufficient and diverse makers by teaching practical studio pottery techniques. By doing so, we attempt to maintain and grow the status of studio ceramics in this country and beyond.
Part Time and Flexible Tutors
to Support Clay College Full-time Diploma
Clay College Stoke is creating a cohort of visiting potters, tutors, and demonstrators to teach and develop our students on a regular or semi-regular basis. We are looking for diverse skill-sets from a range of potters to complement the core delivery of our unique, skills-based 2-year diploma.
The curriculum is stepped to focus on core skills for the first 16 months, before students focus on a specific area for the final major project, which sees students explore firing types, surface and forms culminating in exhibitions in Stoke and London.
The delivery of the diploma is under the direction of Kevin Millward. Visiting tutors will expand the voices, techniques, and approaches our students are exposed to, and we encourage people from diverse backgrounds, professional potters and those working professionally with clay to share their skills with our students. Prior teaching experience is not required. We can tailor the frequency of teaching on a case-by-case basis to fit around busy schedules, whilst making best use of the individual specialisms to have the most impact relative to the curriculum. As an independent course we have a unique model where our students take part in all aspects of ceramic production, from firing kilns to reclaiming clay. This makes for a well rounded and rewarding working environment.
Benefits
- A highly motivated, engaged and skilled student body
- Flexible working patterns to suit professional makers
- Excellent studio facilities including a soda kiln, two gas kilns, two large electric kilns and an electric test kiln
- Working alongside other professional makers in a small, friendly and collaborative team to support the professional development of the next generation
Pay
The day rate for visiting tutors is £200-250 for 7 hours (usually 10-4.30 with a 30 minute break)
Requirements
Visiting tutors are engaged to complement and strengthen/diversify the core curriculum, with the College Manager responsible for briefing visiting tutors ahead of their visit to ensure continuity of delivery. Each potter will have different skills to offer and so the frequency and timing of involvement will be discussed in the application phase. It may be that some candidates are better placed to provide tutorial input and idea development, whilst others are more able to demonstrate sound technical skills and stretch our students that way. We encourage those working as potters to apply, as they are natural role models for our student body and can offer deep insights into their area of specialism. Early career potters are welcome to apply.
A teaching qualification or prior teaching experience is not required to apply for the role of visiting tutor.
