Description

We are delighted to host Clive and Dylan Bowen for a day of demonstrations and conversation.  This is a rare opportunity to see two very different experts in slip-decorated earthenware working together and individually and sharing techniques, tips, stories and insights into their careers.

Clive Bowen worked alongside Michael Leach and Michael Cardew before setting up Shebbear Pottery in the early 70s.  He makes with a local clay, used for centuries for traditional north Devon wares, and fires in a double-chambered, wood-fired kiln.  With a career spanning over 50 years, he is considered one of our national living treasures and has a wealth of knowledge, practical wisdom and experience to share.

Dylan Bowen trained at Shebbear Pottery and studied at Camberwell School of Art before setting up his own pottery in Oxfordshire.  His playful approach to the traditions of English slipware and his energetic decorative techniques are always a joy to experience. His liberating and fresh approach to making will encourage anyone who is looking to loosen up and understand what is important to them as makers.

Numbers are limited to 30 so there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and to get to know these two inspiring makers.

Please note: we will provide tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit, but lunch is not provided. The Middleport Café is open or you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and eat in the students’ lunchroom and there are tables by the canal for if the weather is fine.

Clive and Dylan’s work will also be available to view and purchase in the Clay College Gallery.

Clay College is a not-for-profit organisation. By attending this masterclass, you are supporting the next generation of studio potters.
